my ex girlfriend said we can claim gambling losses on income tax!?
i am not a gambler..once i went with a friend to play bingo for 20.00$ and lost and ten years later i still get a sinking feeling thinking about the loss.my ex gal is always broke but she daily plays lotto.about 30-50 dollars daily. i did find a large pocket book of hers loaded with thousands of old lotto tickets..thats why we broke up and i would find empty liqueur bottles under my bed..anyhow..she like the casinos also..and plays the slots for hours. she said that all the money we lose in gambling can be placed on our income tax..this dont sound right..why would we profit from losing.? does any one know about this cockamamie concept? if i can profit with the IRS..maybe I’ll gamble a dollar here and there..shes acting like the IRS is her golden ticket….see…gambling on the brain!..wouldn’t this cause gamblers to gamble even more and why should they profit with the IRS ?..i think my ex is cracked! i know you have to claim winning, but at losing? proud to pinch the penny!

The IRS allows people to deduct the money spent on gambling against the amount of winnings. If she spends $10.00 on Lotto tickets and wins $100.00, she can deduct the money spent and pay taxes on the remaining $90.00.

The lotteries are designed to earn money for the states, not to improve the lives of those who play the games. To assume that purchasing Lotto tickets is anything but a donation is folly. She is grasping at straws to justify her habit. Gamblers Anonymous would be of help to her it she is ready to face her problem.

 Kwe' | Feb 02, 2010

A woman I worked with in Florida (years ago) won $333,000 once. She had the nerve to ask everyone to collect old tickets for her so she could claim them on her taxes so she wouldn’t lose so much of her jackpot to taxes. I don’t know if it was because she already won, or if anyone can. None of us felt obliged to help.
Baw | Feb 02, 2010

I think that professional gamblers must register with IRS and then must provide evidence of losses & winnings – usually information provided by casinos on high rollers. Also IRS requires that if One wins $2000 or more – a 1099 must be filed by the venue that paid out the prize. Many Bingo parlors will have a $1199 game so there is less or no paperwork involved.

Finally – the odds are always in the favor of the casino. In the long run, the individual loses more than One wins.
ConansOwner | Feb 02, 2010

You can claim gambling losses on your income tax but your must also declare your winnings, which does not make sense because the IRS will not let you write off more losses than against your winnings. That provision was meant for big gambling winners in order for them to pay less taxes on their winnings.
!truth! | Feb 02, 2010

If you are a professional gambler, and peruse that (or any profession) with a reasonable intention of earning money, any losses will count as business losses, and gains as gains. This only works for professionals, and you have to prove the expectation of income. But, yes, it is possible, technically.

What do U think Murder victim's mother 'frustrated' with Iowa courts Castillo Alvarez fled to Mexico?
SPENCER, Iowa (KTIV) – A convicted "ringleader" in a drug-related death of a Siouxland teen, won’t serve up to 80 years.

Now one of the parents of the victim is speaking out.

During a 2007 trial a judge Convicted Juan Humberto Castillo Alvarez of the murder of 15 year-old Sky Erickson.

The slaying happened over 13 years ago over a drug debt, shortly after that, Castillo Alvarez fled to Mexico, and wasn’t caught until just a few years ago.

Now the Iowa Supreme Court of Appeals overturned the conviction saying the state of Iowa failed to comply with Castillo-Alvarez’ right to a speedy trial once they captured him.

"It’s almost more disgust that first of all the court of appeals ruled the way it did, and then the fact the supreme court denied review," said Sky’s mom Joni Ketter.

Both of Erickson’s parents waited years for the ring leader to be caught for nearly ten years. Attending trial after trial during that time, of the numerous gang members that took part in their son’s murder. When Castillo-Alvarez was caught and then convicted they thought it was behind them, but they were wrong.

"I was shocked to tell you the truth that the Supreme Court could see this as an issue that wasn’t important enough for them to review and then the decision and the fact they didn’t angered me," said Ketter.

The high courts refusal to review the ruling by the appeals court means Castillo Alvarez is cleared of his conviction and because of the rule of "Double Jeopardy" he cant’ be tried for the same crime in Iowa.

"The law isn’t always black and white so I’m sure if there is a way for them to hold him accountable for what happened to my son they’ll find it," said Ketter.

Ketter says her son Sky didn’t get a second chance, and is asking herself why Castillo Alvarez should. She says it’s disappointing, but prosecutors aren’t giving up.

"I’m very thankful for the law enforcement in Iowa, Minnesota, and at the federal level that they’re not letting this go that they’re still looking at ways if they can prosecute him they will," said Ketter.

http://www.ktiv.com/Global/story.asp?S=1 1872878

If I were the US Attorney out in Iowa I’d indict him tomorrow for violating the civil rights of Sky Erickson. That’s how they used to get the Klu Klux Klan years after the local courts let them off. He could end up doing about 15 years in the federal system following conviction.

It makes me sick, Iowa, like it’s neighbor on top of it, Minnesota, where I live are both Sanctuary states. Now it seems Iowa City will now become officially a Sanctuary city. Great! Now I’ll be stuck between two of the largest Sanctuary cities in the Midwest, the other being Minneapolis/St.Paul. My county alone has THOUSANDS of illegals right now living off of us, with far more entitlements than we get! And we are American citizens that were born here and lived here our whole lives. Now I expect the illegal population to increase at least two fold because of this.

The science of morality?
This isn’t really a question so don’t waste your time reading it if you don’t care or you just want points. This is more of me coming to peace with myself, if your interested it might help you too.

I always asked myself what is morality, and eventually I got the answer, it doesn’t have to do with religion or any conflicting terms, it doesn’t have to do with the subjective side that we decide things are immoral. It has to do with the science of our species, humans have survived all of this time in natures unpredictable power. We have developed a conscience which is the greatest of things and the worst of things. As humans we have 3 very important factors selfish desires, species survival, and of course the most confusing our thoughts.

What morality is, is our balancing tool for these 3 factors, If these 3 factors aren’t balanced we will ultimately become depressed. Selfish needs are necessary for personal survival, but unnecessary if our actions negatively crosses over another of our species. So you could say it would be easy to rob someone, but my morality knows that action crosses another of my kind in a negative way.(in a way that I wouldn’t want them to cross me)

This leaves the grey area of morality open, because it can be confusing in the subjective term. People can say anything affects them negatively, but this is where our selfish desire kicks in to the game. It can usually have a good awareness of when something is crossing the line of their selfishness and that’s not our problem morally. So we can’t let others selfish desires inflect on ours…that’s moral as well.

Say it however you want, it doesn’t mean there is a god, it doesn’t mean there isn’t. In fact the question of why is completely irrelevant to this understanding that we have to follow as humans in order to be happy.

It basically comes down to this, believe whatever the hell you want, but don’t ever let your beliefs of why, cause you to cross your moral code in an effort to satisfy your selfish desires.

Selfish desires are so confusing in our materialistic world that we have developed. Because it obviously doesn’t seem like humanity is having to much trouble surviving as a species right now. So this is the first step for our selfish desire to try to rationalize around the society desire. Basically depressing emotions is our body’s way of getting our attention that the balance is not being met.

It fascinates me that as humans we do have this ability for surviving, both needs are completely necessary, we have to survive as a society, and we have to survive individually. these are both craves that will never be satisfied you’ll never help society as much as you wish you could, and you’ll never help yourself as much as think you can. So where is happiness? right in the middle, both of those have to be unsatisfiable craves in order for the mechanics to work. Emotions are awesome because they help us discern that we may have played a mind trick to throw factors out of balance. If we aren’t happy it’s because we are subconsciously doing something in our actions we take in life that is negatively affecting another human being.

My emotions fascinate me as they brought me to this realization, I’m fascinated with emotions because of their complexity of awareness in life. To me it honestly suggests that there may be god, it’s not rel event in our situation of living.

If you want to be happy and I mean really happy, stop playing games with yourself, understand that keeping the balance maintained to the best of our ability is the key to our personal happiness. Balance is a feeling of harmony that my emotions have made me understand. That whether I like it or not, there is morality in this world. It could suggest that there is a god. Or it could suggest that we have a very high level of intelligence that is communicated to us through our emotions. Either or why is irrelevant to how. Understanding how is the key to balance and NOT understanding why is the key happiness as it leaves the door open for art, imagination, creativity, individuality.

and I could keep fitting so many more examples of why this is true, but if you actually read through all that crap and your interested and maybe confused, just email me or something, and I try to help you make more sense of it…I didn’t say it wasn’t complicated, I’m just pretty dam sure it’s true.

Do you ever think depression could come from external factors? The world isn’t paradise, it’s a system in which parasites can thrive. It’s sad, really.
Dude | Feb 05, 2010

You have understood something which I must that I share with you; there is a principle presented through the whole and, it may not be fully shown or really grasp as if this idea was simply new or like it was only an impression which was left in your head. It’s as if you wrote about ethics and duty to establish one guide line you have seen, but to make a clear comparison of how it seems to me what you have written, it feels like a dream… I do not mean that it wrong, illogical or impossible to realize: I mean that it is like an outline, left uncompleted.

Besides the style, I must come back to what I saying at first. We share a major idea, and, even if you speak of it using an other image, it comes down to the very same thing.

Morality or what is right, what is good, what should be done… Or more simply, good and evil, are not subjective matters and, if there is anything that is better and preferable or some others which are worst, it must be acknowledged that those things are of such nature in their very essence and that, no matter the culture, the time, the circumstances, the people implied, this nature will remain the same.

And, this last line is very important: it says that good and evil are absolute and lies in the acts themselves and are not relative to anything. I see in your lines that this idea of an absolute guide line, an absolute correctness or like you would say "a perfect balance" comes to be obvious.

Of course, you speak of balance and how we should neither be damageable to our own balance, nor to an other’s; and, before you even thought about writing this, I was writing about how far more damageable is the bad action for the one who carries it out…

All the lines I have written about ethics all point at the same idea:

Good is one and you should always prefer to be good. Or, in a more poetic way:
Among the bad men, none are really happy; only the virtuous man is allowed to smile.

Even more fascinating is this:
"So where is happiness? right in the middle"

It’s interesting how I was speaking of accuracy and ethics and spoken of humility, greatness, as being a middle found between exaggeration and underdoing.

I say: Be as great as you can and make others being as great as you can.
You say: Do not be harmful; neither to yourself, nor to others.
proteacher@ymail.com | Feb 05, 2010

Morality is kind of adaption, means respect your environment, and you will feel in harmony in where you at… see placid.

Caprica ~ New series on TV?
Who’s watching it? What do you think of it thus far? What do you think of the subject matter?

Is it as awesome thus far to you as it is to me?

Who else is slightly perturbed that the actor of the creepy pedophile father from ‘Butterfly Effect’ is playing the loving grieving father in ‘Caprica’?

Is this a TV series, 3 part series, or something else? The opening is 2 hours atleast so I’m wandering if this is a three part series like Tin Man was when it was remade. (Funny that the actess playing Zoe sorta resembles Zoey Deschanel as well.)

caprica is a tv series. it is kind of a prequel to battlestar galactica series that was on syfy.

i am excited to see where it goes from this point. i think it is great to see the early beginnings of william adama and to see how everything happened and why everything happened.

Caprica is a spinoff of the popular TV series Battlestar Galactica (BSG), which ran for four seasons. The new series follow the story of the Adama family from BSG, 60 years before the events in the original show.

You can watch the Caprica episodes at the site below and I have also provided a link where you can find the BSG episodes in case you want to watch it (I highly recommend it, it was an amazing show).

How can I help my dog from being too clingy to me?
My husband and I just rescued a 5yr old neglected dog from an animal shelter and we’ve had him for just one week. Since I work from home the dog hangs out with me the most and has suddenly grown very clingy with me. We want our dog to love and trust us both equally as well as our friends and family who come and visit us or we bring along. We decided when my husband or our friends come they will give the dog treats and pet him while I encourage him in a happy tone but it’s not working all that well. Can anyone give me more advice and encouragement? We love him very much but I am very sad that he can’t be more friendly and trusting with my friends and family. Thank you!

Its normal for him to be clingy.
He just came out of the shelter. Give him some time and he’ll come around.
I.Love.My.Mutts | Feb 02, 2010

Please do not force your dog to be friendly to everyone, you say that he was a neglected dog and that you have only had him one week. Give him a chance to meet other people slowly as you have to re establish trust in him because he does not know if he will be rejected again. When he is ready he will automatically come to make friends, but he has to do it in his own time. He needs your patience and kindness in these and other matters he has to face moving into a new environment and a new home with new people. Good luck and God bless you for giving this dog a home where he will be loved and protected.
dudleydo | Feb 02, 2010

well its just been one week..u need to give him some more time.. it may even take a month ….but eventually it will happen..u dont have to work hard for that.. just being with him.. taking him out ..spending time with him.. is all he wants.. tell your husband to give him food whenever possible….this is big way of bonding…..all the best
Rain Drop | Feb 02, 2010

Well, since your dog had a hard start in life and was not treated well in the past, it will take him some time to really learn to trust people. Possibly even a few months. He has to get used to his new home and realize that he is safe and loved.

You are on the right track with the treats. I would even say to leave a basket of toys or a tin of treats at the door and have your guests take one and give it to the dog before they even say hello to you so the dog get the idea that people can be good and kind right away.

The fact that your dog is bonding to you is a good thing. You do have to be careful though, because if he gets used to you being with him all the time and then you go out one day, he may panic and think you abandoned him. You should make a point of getting out of the house for a little while each day so he learns you will come home to him.

Naturally your dog is bonding to you more than your husband since you are home more. You can counter this by having your husband spend time playing with your dog while you are in another room. Your dog will also start to bond with you husband if they go on walks or to the park without you. They need some one-on-one time. Plus, when a dog leaves his territory, he will naturally feel safer in a pack and so will bond with your husband that way. He’ll see him as pack leader, and look to him for guidance and protection in each new situation he encounters.

In time your dog will adapt to his new loving home, and be very happy that you rescued him.
