in need of iguana help!?
i am going to be getting a iguana for my boyfriend for his birthday.
i have done my research on all the things needed
the diet, everything.
he has owned a couple of iguanas in the past.
but had to move and give them up.
problem is he used to feed his old iggys crickets and fruit and such and from my understanding
fruits are for occasion but your aren’t allowed to feed them crickets or bugs or cat and dog food and stuff like that because its hard to digest and it can kill them in early life from liver or kidney failure
he is fully convinced that this information is a load of b.s
is there any way to convince him to give them the right food choices or if crickets are indeed fine to feed them?
or is this just not the right thing to get for him? I’m fully committed to helping taking care of the iggy feeding and such since I’m home most of the day. any other info i should be aware of?
Here’s my suggestion, although it’s not what you’re really wanting to do… hopefully, since you’ve done your research on all the things it will need, you have all the money saved up to get everything it will need as well as the iguana… which means you’ve got a nice chunk of change saved up.
In the past, all the up to date care books said, yes, feed them protiens… of course this information has changed… in the wild, yes, iguanas will eat various forms of meat for protien and calcium needs, but with the inclusion of supplement powder in their diet, additional protien and calcium sources are too much… maybe your boyfriend is going by information that’s 15 or 20 years old… buy a few up to date iguana care and maintenance books, and let him know that if he wants you to get him an iguana, he will have to at the very least read through the chapters on diet.
Books are a good thing to have on hand, anyway… common health problems can be diagnosed and treated (preferably completely avoided, but still), etc… Yes, the internet is nice, but with different sources giving different information, it’s sometimes hard to tell who to listen to… you’ll probably find that books agree with each other a little more often.
If he can’t be convinced that proper care and diet is good for his potential iguana, maybe you should get him a bearded dragon or something along those lines that does need various insects in it’s diet…

google MBD and you’ll see what happens when iggys are fed bugs. and too much fruit. All i can suggest is give your boyfriend some reading material for iggys. They are not hard to keep, but you do have to give them everything they need to thrive. Expect to fork over an easy 300-500 dollars just to get started. And when all is said and done they will end up being about 20 lbs. and 5.5 to 6.0 feet long.
